Developing Leadership came about as a result as a result of an international conference ‘Learning from best practice worldwide’ organised by the NCSL. The book examines the role that leaders play in improving the quality of learning for everyone within the school. Well-known international contributors explore key themes which reflect present understanding of good school leadership, and inform school leaders about leading edge thinking which bears on their role. The themes discussed are as follows:

  • Developing leaders for their future not their past, Dean Fink
  • Developing leadership for succession, Andy Hargreaves
  • Distributing leadership, James Spillane
  • Developing leadership for learning communities, Louise Stoll & Ray Bolam
  • Developing leadership in context, Allan Walker & Clive Dimmock
  • Developing beginning leadership, Fred Paterson & John West-Burnham
  • Developing leadership for e-confident schools, Tony Richardson

The book is a very interesting read. It gives great insight and food for thought around the importance of context, leading learning communities, distributing leadership, sustainable leadership etc. Each of the chapters is deceit and relatively short. This has the advantage of offering a particular expert’s insight on a topic, encouraging the reader to follow-up on particular areas of interest – An excellent resource text that can be dipped into, time and time again.
